amabile cantabile
a love song
"Or leave a kiss within the cup
And I'll not ask for wine."—Ben Jonson
'twas but the gentle whisper
of the heart upon your lips,
no alto flute e'er crisper,
earth more crowned by moon's eclipse.
it was a sigh of velvet pearls,
because your heart was lonely.
my pianistic fingers
played the ebon-ripe refrain
that for the moment lingers
but to fall and rise again.
it was a whisper answering
the french song that you only
have copyright to drown in,
when the stage is soft with light
and all the hats are thrown in,
a surrender to the night.
amabile cantabile:
your love is so amazing!
gratuitous, the spirit
cries a reign of deep emotion;
your kiss in one fleet minute
lights a flame of sweet devotion:
it is a song, an aria,
whose lyrics are its blazing.
