Stone Faced

I stood and watched you
drive away
not so much as a wave
or finger
kicking at the dirt I uncovered
a rock
picking it up I noted it’s
jagged edges
shortly afterwards introducing it to
my pocket
maybe good luck
maybe not
over the next few months
that rock
turned over between my fingers until
rubbed smooth
about a year later filling up my car at the
corner store
afterwards I headed inside to buy a
six pack
was a few cents shy on
the price
as my hand searched
my pocket
the clerk nodded towards the
change bowl
about the same time feeling something in
my pocket
the rock felt comfortable in
my hand
like the memory
of you
smooth and cool
yet foreign
as I dropped it in the bowl
I asked
think anyone could
use this
the clerk shrugged and said
who knows
I drove off scattering
pea gravel
as I pulled back onto
the blacktop
a dump truck loaded
with rocks
blew his horn as he
passed by
popped a top on a
cold one
saluted the trucker and said dropped
my load
good luck with
all yours
