On the Shore

The sun like a ripe pear

Leaking juicy rays

Onto watercolour grey

While sand filters through toes

Like coffee grains

A painted horizon absorbed

Into lapis lazuli eyes

Embedded in bloodshot matrices

Shaped and peeled like almonds

Retinas drunk on a rice wine

Of stratus and stratocumulus

Cottony celestial cocktail of

Softest rain suspended in place

Floating miniature oceans

Dressed as snow white kittens

Waiting to fall into the padded laps of

Russian steppes, wild corn fields

Red and yellow tulip beds

And yes, this sea of black cherry wine

Silver filaments and liquid lead

The sea is a forget-me-not race car

Speeding down a highway of sound

An aquatic underground cinema

Showing films full of coral

Proud dancing whales, movie star fish

To but see the faded poster outside

Is already the sweetest delight

To this land-bound mermaid

Cursed with legs instead of a tail.
