Dead Lover's Song

Absent eyes gaze at the sun,
the source of  life and warmth.
Young lives so easily undone
from the flash of distant guns.

He folds upon the ground,
all ceasing, all loves releasing.
Young girl at home without a sound
touches her moist and precious mound.

She lusts for one already gone,
with visions of his return.
Not knowing how she’s been wronged,
she hums her dead lover’s song.

While viewing beers poured for the thirteen solders who died evacuating Kabul, I thought of other pleasures they left behind.
