No Longer Unbeaten *full series repost*

I watch her smiling as she bounces up and down and stomps her feet, first the right then the left as she slams her gloves together. Then falls to her knees in silent prayer. When she is done a chill rush down my spine from the fire in her eyes, she is ready… ready to unleash hell inside a kickboxing ring. I present her with her National Championship title belt, the one she’s held for eighteen months and valiantly defended five times without ever seeing the final bell.

A split second later her music hits an she raises to her feet, giving me a quick kiss before beginning the long walk to the ring, pausing to salute her legions of screaming fans. I watch her perform her pre-fight ritual: kneeling in every corner and saying a prayer of gratitude to the legends of Muay Thai. Before punching the turnbuckles and stomping her foot in her opponent’s corner.

“Two and a half rounds” she says giving me her goal to finish the fight as she meets me in her corner. I put in her mouthpiece and give her hug before dropping to the arena floor to watch the madness ensue…

And the madness ensues for five, three-minute rounds. Each round I hold my breath a little more until the final bell chimes and both ladies collapse to the mat entangled in each other’s arms.

“That was a helluva fight, I don’t know who won, keep your head up.” I say as I bow and shake the other gladiator’s taped hand. Then hold my breath again as the decision is read. I rapidly replay every round in my head trying to guess who won. I feel my heart sink as the announcer declares the judges have ruled the fight a Split Decision, increasing the chances of her belt being taken. Seconds that feel like hours pass before the announcer exclaims that the championship is staying around the waist of my gladiator princess. Who quickly moves to pick up her opposition and carry her around the ring before bowing at the feet of the only woman to ever push her to the limit.

I see the face of my Champion for the first time backstage…bloody, bruised, swollen and beaten. Her nose is broken and her left eye is nearly shut so I settle for a simple hug and she hands me her title and whispers…

“I don’t want it…it’s not mine…she’s the real Champion…I am no longer unbeaten…I lost that fight…I LOST THAT FIGHT!”
