BLUE JAY DOWN

                                                    BLUE JAY DOWN

     My roommate told me about the blue jay today. There are two of them that come by to eat the peanuts, along with Chippette the squirrel.
     We have a couple of dozen sparrow pets who come by to feast on bread crumbs and to drink cool water from the crystal dish which we leave at the edge of the gate. The mockingbird and BIG DADDY Grackle come by on occasion to have a drink, and on rare moments even the cardinals make an appearance.
     Today the blue jay sat by the crystal dish. It drank cool water until it couldn't move it's beak anymore. It could not fly away, no, not in the way that one would assume a creature could be capable of. It could not even stand up. Death was creeping through it's flesh and feathers. It came here to die where it knew that it was loved , there by the crystal dish.
     Diane held a small dish of water up to it's beak and spoke to the creature
as it gazed up at her in universal understanding.
     She gently splashed a few drops of water across the blue jays beak and brushed it's head with a moistened tissue.
     The bird tilted it's head back up at her  and appeared to attempt to stand, and yet chose to crawl with wings and foot those ten long feet into the shadows at the corner of  the fence where it could die, and once again fly freely into the.........................................
