DUP TOXIC WASTE DUMP
Good morning
So once again this site seems to be more toxic then ever.
All I ever wanted here was to write and engage with other poets in a friendly way. In the end, I just want to read good poetry and be read myself.
That's it
Why does a poetry site have to be so toxic and competitive ?
Why ?

I crave connection, and I avoid so many and so much. I am grateful to be able to experience your art and your writing. Thanks for being here.

Thanks so much for your comment
It's nice to connect here but often a lot of things get in the way of human connections. Mainly jealousy and competitiveness and social media disease .... I think that covers it
Reach out anytime
BIG THANKS

One of the most generous poet-spirits I've ever known was Jon Victor Anderson. He has a great selection of poems available here
https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/jon-anderson
But that's not my primary motive for writing this comment. Jon was a very influential teacher in the 20th century, and a lot of his students became "stars" in the poetry world.
What's more, as a student of Jon's, I hardly ever heard him really "attack" or go hard at a student's work (he did say of about one of my close friend, John Payne's poems, "it's just writing" ("writing" in this case being a pejorative)). But that was about as hard as you'd ever hear him go.
He always focused on the good things in a poem, foregrounding these. He figured if the writer could cultivate the good, that would eventually over-take the bad.
In my own work, all I see are the flaws. And I think this is true for most writers. It's no mean feat to find the way something is flawed.
Interestingly, Jon's teacher was the poet John Berryman. Berryman was a notoriously hard on his students, ruthlessly criticizing their work. Furthermore, Berryman had a mercurial, violent disposition. He was once fired after being jailed when he attacked his landlord.
I love both their poems. Berryman's are widely available; unfortunately, Jon's books are mostly out-of-print. The best of what's available is on the Poetry Foundation, much of it from the early years--60s & 70s.
One of Jon's most famous poems is "The Secret of Poetry," in which he writes that he wants to create something so "beautiful," it will leave the reader "inconsolable all day," summing up: "the secret of poetry is cruelty."
I never really considered myself a disciple of Jon's poems, but looking back, I can see his influence in my work.

You're comments on here are a super achievement for anyone who receives one. I value you immensely. DUP is fortunate to have you grace our site. But DUP is as I call it at times. Toxic, rudely competitive and filled with some ultra insecure people who bring a lot of hurt to other members with their childish ways. I've been here close to 8 years. I don't consider myself a good writer but I try. I do have a muse who has helped me a lot and I keep trying to improve.
I just get frustrated with the bullshit and as a veteran I keep trying to steer people to be about the poetry, not their petty insecurities...
Translation: write and rise above yourself....
Thank you Mark

Sheesh! Not certain what I missed, but I am happy I've been too busy to really participate here if it's been drama.
Ain't nobody got time for that. If it persists, block and move on. Just move on. Drama cannot survive without fuel. A competitor cannot compete without an opponent. And so forth. It's not action that begets war, or drama, or a competition: it's REACTION.

Wow, I'm lucky I haven't come across anything like this yet. As you might have noticed, I'm new, and not always very active.

I feel you I try to write and read and enjoy myself
I hate it when attacks happen here
you know I still get hated on from time to time
but I think I've outgrown past behaviors in this regard...

Toxicity really shows how poisonous and contagious the soul can be. I was always told growing up, if you have nothing good to say, then don't. But we should always speak up whenever something like this happens.
Thank you saying it out loud.
Respect brother.
