To Burn [Dad]

You had 30 years
To show me love
30 years to be
My father

Instead

You let
Your career shield you
From your responsibilities
To your family

You were always a ghost
Always working, never home
Hiding all of your emotions
As if you were an empty host

So imagine my surprise
How impacting it was when
You used corporal punishment
As a means of discipline

And imagine my surprise
As a teen, dying inside
Full of repressed secrets
When you shook me by the arms

I learned to give up all hope
There was no winning your love
Your priorities were so fucked up
All you did was blame others

Religious
Privileged
White
Male
Dogmatist

You were dead to me
From the start
All along
