The Educated Poet Never Learns

"I don't like lyrical poetry"
"You write songs, not poetry"

I have a problem with writers today
So well educated, with their ten dollar words
Speaking only to each other
And treating the simple man like he doesn't deserve...
...to understand
And then... not understanding why they are not more popular

Joe Blow doesn't like poetry
I wonder why?

Einstein once said,
"If you can't explain it simply, then you don't understand it yourself"
Tell me, do YOU understand?

Rhymes and rhythm, these are tools every speechwriter understands
Because they speak to everyone and reach the common man
Songs are happily sung
By both the old and the young
Let's face it, by everyone

And the educated poet scoffs
In free verse
To their perspicacious poetic friends...

And nothing changes

Author's Note
I've had this stored for awhile. The idea that songs are not poetry has irritated me.

Feelings, ideas, they are shared by using words. Anything that allows that to happen is poetry to me.
All writing remains the property of the author. Don't use it for any purpose without their permission.
