A Tree Grows

When I was small
I planted a seed
My father said it would
be a tree
I watered it everyday,

I was only five
but I knew then
if I stayed faithful
with waters I pour
on the not yet
budding seedling,
one day I would have
a majestic tree

Each day in the hot
Summer sun
I kept it maintained
with love
caring for the infant
watching it as it grew

We moved away one winter's day
there the tree I left
My tears weren't enough
to keep it fed
I waved as we pulled away

Twenty years later
I went back to the tree

In awe of its majesty
It grew to be a giant oak
Its limbs stretched to the skies

Looking up
I saw the tip of the glorious
It grew to be magnificent
This was the tree I fed.
