THE OLD COCKSMAN
INTERESTING
A friend told me
about a very unusual
bar and club on
a backstreet in Shanghai.
A cabbie knew just where
to take me and in broken
English asked me if
I had ever been there before,
when I said, No, he smiled
and said, "You in for big surprise."
It took several minutes to
adjust my eyes; once able
to see, I was in a club
as large as a stadium.
I was escorted to a barstool
and took a seat by an older
man whose ethnicity wasn't clear
but his English was perfect.
In conversation, between drinks,
we shared stories. Out of the
blue, he asked, "How old do
you think I am?" I don't know
I replied. He said with a smile,
