The Man Who Murdered Milosevic

I thought about the man who had to look
after Milosevic.  How hard
to care, while thinking of the lives he took.
Keeping him healthy just to disregard
the court. Watching the trial seem to slip
out of the hands of the prosecutor.
Prescribing drugs for him to have the zip
to change from the accused to tormentor.
Another drug to contraindicate,
to stop his heart, stop the trial, the lies
and pain.  The justice of it would placate
his mind.  -- Another butcher to despise,
a trial which found the guilt of Karadzic
but, the innocence of Milosevic.

Author's Note
I remember the war in the Balkans, the demonisation of Milosevic, his trial and death. Years later, when Radovan Karadzic was put on trial and found guilty, I was surprised that Karadzic 's trial showed that Milosevic was innocent of his charges. The poem is an attempt to imagine that Milosevic was murdered by a medic who cared for his health while he was on trial.  That the medic justified the murder to himself but the horror of realising years later that he'd killed an innocent man.
