Stand, Brethren

Would you ask the Jewish community to humbly stand?
For an anthem whose origins relished in deaths of their man
Would you demand that they capitulate then berate nonconformers?
If a stanza about the Holocaust was lost, would that be the answer?

An erasure of a few words don't deserve to be praised
But when it comes to the chattel slave, no one is phased
That's depraved and has raised these questions
Oh say can you see the hypocrisy in the equations

Is there a subtraction of empathy for he that looks like me?
Making it hard for you to see the err in ways of Francis Scott Key
"Days of slavery are over so just get over it", many say
Expecting me to pridefully sing about my ancestors' dismay

Would you convey the same to families who grieve 9/11?
Isn't that catastrophic event ancient history, brethren?
Don't step in the excrement that you're shoveling my way
I'm poetically conveying why I don't feel the same about "Independence" Day

The veil of yesterday has been tossed away and burned
Now mine eyes realize that there's much to be learned
As the world turns, I discern what's behind the disguise
Trying to unlearn the turns and routes of assimilated lies

Don't see it the same as I? Cool, do you
I was once blinded to these views too
Now the pixels in triumph doth wave
O'er the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave
