Anchor's Aweigh

Let slip this
fingernail-sliver of moon
royal gift from the
mistress Selene
gossamer light
offers a soft cocoon
the midnight sky deep
and the shine serene

Daughter of the stars
floats upon the waves
in graceful dance of
lunar pirouettes
jig under the glow
oh watery graves
quiet defined by
inky silhouettes

Solid bone white is
the mighty ship’s hull
Dipper hung heavy
in the western sky
windows stand empty,
sockets in a skull
silence shattered
by a lone seagull’s cry

Orb now plays a
mournful funeral dirge
the mistress’s grip
loosens in sweet release
Sun bows in honour
of the tide’s last surge
ripples and shimmers
now finally cease
