Image for the poem before our time

before our time

before high mountains grew from void
or rivers sprang from cotton roots
                there was a seed
                        naught could impede
                                destined to bleed
                                        to set its creed
before eve’s fruit the morning cloyed
i knew you bore love’s attributes

before night came to cloak the day
        or sunlight knew horizon blush
                i felt the need
                        to intercede
                                lest lust and greed
                                        dark passions feed
                        until their tentacles find play
to bridle hope by vile ambush

before you sat across from me
        so innocent of my approach
                faith guaranteed
                        ‘twas no misdeed
                                you should concede
                                        to fill my need
before our time i had the key:
your love would save me from reproach
