Hiding in plain sight
the lying mirror
you are brave
you are noble
the mask we are forced to wear
hiding the masks we choose to wear
we exist in both light and darkness
drawn only to the light as moths
denying the dark
hiding our loneliness
hiding ourselves
in the masks so carefully chosen
"does this mask go with these high heels"
pretend intimacy
and deep communication
the masks never slip
never allowing someone inside
piecing the romanticized veil
we see in the mirror of lies
the image we see
hiding all imperfection
the shell becoming our sum and total
omitting our soul
screaming in the dark
screaming in the middle of the night
to touch someone just once
without the smothering masks
how noble
how brave
to chain our souls
and live within the mirror
forsaking all the world
