Green Eyes Deflowered

Her longing green eyes were scorched by loss.
The night’s broken promises swirled.
She carefully held the coffee between soft palms,
remembering the heat she’d embraced and tasted.

She bowed her head and dipped her tongue into the hot cream
drawing quickly away to curse the burn.
Her bloodshot eyes were wet as she looked at the ceiling,
knowing she should have pulled away sooner.

She knew their crashing together was inevitable.
She’d secretly desired it for years,
those things her teaching had denied her.
Raging waters rose against the levee of her upbringing.
She'd seen the lustful glances and felt accidental touches
in passing that made her body quiver.
Now she was free and on her own.
She was her own.
He must have sensed her giddiness and
known his advantage.

She added a salty tear to the blur of cream
swimming in her cooling cup.
The tear was from eyes no longer hungry,
but betrayed and alone.

Last night she shared her sacred temple in the ecstatic worship of life.
Together, they danced and sang within her dark, warm walls,
once protected by the fortress of family and teachings
where all is black or white with no space for tenderness.
She’d chosen all and he had taken all.  The treasure so long protected
had been so easily surrendered.

As she sat in the coffee shop buzzing with life and laughter,
she imagined him cheerfully rising,
dizzy from the euphoria of his night.
No doubt he’d move forward guiltless and unashamed
in his pursuit of longing green eyes.
