Highway Of Tears

So many missing and murdered indigenous women
did they deserve to die the way these people have?
mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and grandmothers
some would blame their at risk lifestyle and other crap

At risk lifestyles from being oppressed for many years
Alcoholics? Yes. Prostitues? Yes. Drug addicts? Yes
deserving of less respect because that is all they knew?
no, they deserved better because of their addictions

These women deserved love, kindness, support and help
but aboriginals in Canada seldom get that kind of luxury
dirty, drunk Indians I’ve heard them called, belittled often
criticized for not having jobs or a decent education

Being Métis I’ve seen racism first hand, experienced it
people are people and deserve the respect of others
compassion is just a word these days, seldom practiced
No one deserves to die because of the colour of their skin

It’s difficult to change when born into a cycle of misery
cycles of alcoholism, rape, physical and mental abuse
when you learn at a young age you’re just a piece of meat
to be used and treated in anyway somebody sees fit

The cycle has to be broken or it just goes on and on
residential school and 60s scoop survivors suffering
beaten like dogs and told they were worthless people
it has to change, it has to stop, we can end the cycle
