The Palm Reader

She said our lives are mysteries,
of this we can be certain.
She said my past was plain to see.
She parted the satin curtains.

I took the bait and walked right in.
She held my calloused hands.
Her aging fingers traced across my skin
as she read my broken strands.

Her long gray hair fell across her face.
What sparkle fell from her eye?
She raised her head and gently smiled
through eyes of tears she said,

“Your life has been a lonely one
filled with war and strife.
You gave all for this failing country,
even the death of your wife.”

Her slender frame stood quietly.
Her blouse fell to the floor.
She took my hand and softly said,
“Come with me behind the door.”

Her face though pale and wrinkled
was sweet and full of kindness.
Her body glowed as if in a dream.
She said, “Life sometimes blinds us.”

Then she became my departed wife
so beautiful and young.
She kissed me and knelt silently
and gave her silky tongue.

I stood transported back in time
when love was young and pure.
She was my wife, complete and whole.
Ah, the power of her lures?

As we made love I heard her speak
in the voice of a distant past.
She said, “I’ve missed your love these years.
Oh, please dear, make it last.”

I spent my last thrust deep within
her young and shinning skin.
Then the aging woman smiled at me,
“I hope you’ll come again.”
