Great Adventurer

I searched all the land
answering the call of the hunt
found prey at every avenue
had the right tools to get that hide
some were beautifully vicious
others let me devour them whole
ether way
business was good

cruel, heartless, and at times pathetic
this routine became meaningless
what used to be excitement
started tasting like tv dinners
every breakup leaving a bad aftertaste
I felt like giving up the hunt
until I saw a gazelle cross my path
her eyes were simply stunning

I pounced with my smoothest lines
nothing seemed to win her heart
the chase became my obsession
I wasn’t about to give her up
she wasn't like other girls
no, this one felt special
fully loaded with tries
there was no greater prize
in my eyes

strangers became friends
friends became kissing monsters
with each day finding ways to draw her in
out on the town watching the lights at night
went in for what would be my final attempt
pushed her hair to the side
tasting sweet lips

kissing monsters became lovers
lovers became life partners
coming home, kicking off my muddy shoes
sitting back in the recliner
the great adventurer is now retired
