AMERICAN BONES

these ancient bones have turned to stone,
fossilized like the famous redwoods of arizona
or the tibia of a tyrannosaurus rex
yet complaining when i drag 'em out of bed
as though it's not me doing all the work
and the knees especially raising hell,
waking up the soft tissue
like that tendon at the right elbow
that whines like a bitch and the prostate
all puffed up and obstinate, slowing down the flow of things
and "holy shit(!) you ain't a-going to work, old man?"
and i say hell yes i'm a-goin' to work
cuz workin', cuz, is the 'merican way
and i might be old but i'm still american
(an' i got the debt to prove it!)
