Good Friday
It started with the music.
Driving, gritty bass rhythm,
keening guitar’s wail,
time signature intrigue,
emotion-ripped vocals…
…ear candy for a budding musician.
Then it was the story.
A revolutionary, calling out the status quo,
unwilling to compromise purpose,
a misunderstood martyr,
friends torn by fear and consequences…
…capturing all that is tragic in humanity.
Then it became a ritual.
More personal with every listen,
every year of experience suffered,
every book, chapter and verse of the full story learned,
every person loved and lost,
every regret accumulated,
and every graceless interpretation discarded.
And still each time,
the thing that moves my heart
to learn and live a better Way…
Always,
first,
it starts with the music.

Hi there k,
I read this on the NaPo forum and hoped you publish it here! It's just such a superbly crafted poem. I loved the whole layout and each stanza just presses upon my soul. It's how important music and having that outlet is to me as well. I thrive on it, especially live music and it's one of THE HARDEST aspects this pandemic has inflicted. Not having the opportunity to see/hear live music and all that entails... oh yeah... it's call FUN... (groan!!) I must have hundreds of dollars of Ticketmaster tickets that were refunded because of all the live music cancelations from last year! Not to mention the local availability, too, that disappeared ... Anyway, I digress.. lol..
I just adored that feeling you so gorgeously conveyed here, your love for music and how and why it blossomed, what a pleasure to read.
Your last three lines..... boom!!
Yesss! 👍🏻
I thank you so much for sharing this fantastic piece

I'm a huge sucker for musical theatre... today I found a version I hadn't heard before of this Good Friday favourite on youtube, so I was pretty thrilled. Even more so that it gave me a topic for today's poem!
Anyway, music is how the divine reaches me, more often than not. I'm glad you understand! Sorry to hear about all your tickets.... My big loss this pandemic has been not being able to gather and make music with my friends. There's a piece of my soul that's just wilting. Online collaboration tools have helped, but... it's not the same.
Thanks for the love and the RL.

Music, the universal language -- you captured it in one BT -- excellent. It makes Good Friday really good too :))

It is universal for sure...
I'm humbled by the RL add; thank you so much.
As for Good Friday... I think first learning the Jesus story through the perspective of Judas has been very healthy for my spirituality!

It's said music is food for the soul
...
And theatre makes it come alive beautifully...
Nice ink

My soul certainly starves without it! As for musical theatre... I have never watched a musical that didn't make me cry. Something about the joy of seeing talented people embodying music on stage just undoes me. It was particularly bad/wonderful when it was my own kids performing!

An absolutely delightful testament to the power and inspiration music has to move us, to remind us, to draw us back into time while presently grounding.
Your offerings are phenomenal!

This particular work of music has grounded me for many years...
Many thanks for your kind words. It's good to be forced to sit and write each day.

Your storytelling style here has a gentle unfolding, rich with detail, a subtle presence of personal depth, that is captivating.

I do not think I could live without music. It holds so much power. I am always confused by people who say that they don't really listen to music. All I can think is how much they miss! (and are they human....)
You do such a great job of taking the reader along on the journey of your yearly, musical ritual.

No. People who don't like music are robots. No question!
