Cautionary Tale

This is a beautiful film
You'll understand when you are older
This endless sequence of shadows and laughter
You can only relate in dreams
Can only feel with prayer

This is a consoling lullaby
You'll understand when you are older
Every word in your good girl conscience
Quite absurd--
The notion we are more than paper dolls
Spreading wildly across this dying planet
Recycling, dieting, rioting ideals of
Granite and stone--the hearts on loan
The ivory towers
Quite absurd

This is a lonely world
You'll understand when you are older
No one knows you like your mother
No one frets and tends forever
To her wildflower baby's bower
You'll be her little girl forever
This is a lonely world.

This was a poem for a neice I thought was about to go the wrong way. She didn't, and after I wrote it I felt it was too coercive and guilting feeling, but I still like the poem.
