psalm 6

the Creation psalm
to the Chief Poet; a psalm of Andrew

1 the light and the darkness
are poetry, O Lord,

2 for You hang the rolling skies
like curtains
to reveal or to conceal
the beauty of Your Will.  Selah.

3 You fold the darkness away,
and we behold
the light of day,
wherein we have liberty
to honour Your marvelous works.

4 You usher the sun
into the bosom of your
secret heavens,

5 and we behold
the splendour
of the nighttime skies,

6 wherein we are numbered
as earth's dust
by Thy jubilant stars.  Selah.

7 Thy seas and Thy lands
are poetry, O Lord,
whose metaphors
of mountains and of valleys

8 are the rising and falling
of our fragile thoughts,
in perishable bodies,

9 robust at dawn
and utterly diminished at dusk.  Selah.

10 the verdant trees
teach us to clap our hands
with the rhythm
of the iambs
of the Great I Am.

11 the choral orchestration
of the sun, the moon, and the stars
is a symphonic poem
that only peace can sing.  Selah.

12 the wingéd birds,
the seabound flocks,
the creatures of the rivers
and the lakes,

13 all are alike to Thee,
under the metre
of Thy Great Baton.  Selah.

14 the landlocked hart that panteth,
the beast enraged, that ranteth,
the snake in disguise,
the night owl so wise;

15 they are stanzas, O Lord,
in the epic litany of life;

16 for our petitions cease not,
day or night,
even as Your mercies fail not,
unto all generations.  Selah.

17 the living soul of man,
the loftiest poetry
of Your masterful repertoire,

18 reflects the parsing
of Your Sovereign Liberty
that gives him unguent grace,

19 though sin would make
an heroic tragedy
of his noncompliant
stubbornness.  Selah.

20 grant us Your Pleasant Rest, O Lord;
for in Your Hands
are our beginning
and our end.

21 O Poet of Rest,
restore us to the ensemble
of Thy majestic repertoire,

22 that we may know that
Thou art God
and declare Thy Name forevermore,
in all of Thy creation.  Selah.
