psalm 5

to the young guitarist and budding flautist;
a psalm of Andrew

1 have mercy on me, O God,
   have mercy on me:
   for my soul is bowed down
   like a broken string
   without a melody;

             2 a broken reed
               that has no breath
               to sing Your praise.

                            3 imperfect are my cadences,
                              for i cannot find resolve.

                                           4 a broken string, O God,
                                             Thou wilt not despise;
                                             and a bruised reed
                                             Thou wilt not discard.

5 for even the broken
  and the bruised
  shall sing again
  at Your touch.  Selah.

             6 consider my wretchedness
               and hasten to my rescue,
               lest in my broken discomfiture
               i rust in Your presence;

                            7 lest i choke upon
                              my aperture
                              and pipe a dreadful dirge.

                                     8 i will arise now
                                       and seek Your
                                       mending grace;

9 i will take a deep breath
   and flute Your Name
   above the trees. Selah.

            10 thus shall the dust sing,
               thus shall the clay rejoice in You,
               thus shall the broken string
               and the bruised reed
               rejoice in Your goodness.

                           11 for You alone are my God
                              the Lord,
                              Who mends broken vessels
                              and gives them utterance
                              to sing again in harmony;

                                                         12 Who makes joyful music
                                                            to rise like a symphony
                                                            in the heavens
                                                            and in all the earth. Selah.
