The Day They Came

Though deep in fright,
This tale I write
About the day they came.
And since that day,
I cannot say
I've ever been the same.

Within the seams
Of deepest dreams
They came to let me know
From eons past,
They came at last
To help mankind to grow.

But underneath
Their smiling teeth,
I felt not all was well.
Their kindly eyes
Told naught but lies.
Their tongues, they promised hell.

They looked at me,
These travelers three,
As anger crossed their gaze.
And then they said,
“Your kind is dead.
Your world ends in a blaze.”

“Why are you here?”
I asked in fear.
My heart was pounding hard.
“Begone from me!
I’ll not help thee!”
I tried to stand my guard.

They turned to go.
“We’ll have you know
That this is not the end.
We will return.
Your world will burn.
You’ll lose both kin and friend.”

I howled a scream
Within my dream,
And sat up in a sweat.
I heaved and gasped.
The sheet I clasped.
My hands were cold and wet.

And so, I write,
Despite my fright.
I know not where or when,
But still I wait,
Bound to my fate,
Until they come again.
