Anchor

An anchor tied around my ankle
Like a sky divers second shoot
Clings to me as i to it
Needy and desperate, a child to its mother

I don’t remember how it was forged
Who or what smelt the steel lock about the buckling joint
It seemed as though I’d awoken only to realise
I’d never been without it

It’s chain carries a considerable toll
A cortège of delinquents that i have not the strength or resolve to tame
An arduous endeavour was that of each sunken step
Resigning me to never venture from my bed

The bars of the cot that once brought security
Only now sought to imprison

Slumped at the demise of the cortège sat a pitiful atrocity
Lurking behind, enforcing compliance defiling all in its wake
Scorned only by the ground upon which wounds stood to attention
Like children made en passent pawns by castling rulers
Too long lacking the resolve to dictate morality

The anchor my once passive critic turned militant advocate
I cannot be freed of its bond
Despite its pressing condemnation of all i hold dear

An anchor latched around my ankle
Like darkness and the night we walk together
Aside are the differences that made us
We stand as mere fragments of languid potential and despondency
It weighed on me and i on it
As if pressure somehow would fuse us into a collective state of being
Where in we could be once more; whole.
