IN PRAISE OF REBENESQUE WOMEN

AN EYE-OPENER

I still remember the day
in an art appreciation class
when the professor announced,
"Today we are going to study
the works of Peter Paul Rubens,
a Flemish artist who lived
between 1577 and 1640.
He is the father of the famous
title given to larger women:
'Rubenesque Women.'"
A voice whispered from the
middle of the class, "You mean
fat women." My limited knowledge
agreed. But I was in for a beautiful
awakening because of that class years
ago. Education is a marvelous thing.
Rubens paintings were of various
subject, but those of voluptuous
women coined the famous adjective
"Rubenesque woman",
referring to women who were
painted in the nude.
(MY favorite is Venus and Adonis).
The phrase and title
RUBENESQUE WOMEN
is based on Rubens works.
The title refers to women who are:
Shapely,
Plump,
Fleshly,
Curvy,
Full-figured,
Opulent,
Sensual,
Goddesses,
Larger jewels,
Full curves,
Firmly soft,
and so forth.
The final selling point
was when the professor
brought a Rubenesque lady
to class for us to paint.
I am still awed by Rubenesque
ladies, not to the rejection of
others. I have my paints and
brushes ready.
Do I have a volunteer?
