The World At War

There's hardly light enough to truly call it day
We're both wide awake and dying to get away
Away from all the goddamned fighting that seems to hold us
Hold us in its sway
I've seen enough in my time here with you tonight
To know that it's not worth the time spent on the fight
The things you're sorry saying when daylight comes around
Are exactly what you meant to say and you damn well said it right
It has become impossible for either one of us
It has become a painful nightly ritual
I don't really want to start believing all the shit that we each say
The love we shared has shrivelled up and blown away
I'm blown away
Filled with self recriminations, tears and pain
I'm not blind enough not to see the only way
Alone again but who's to blame
Sometimes things just don't work out
They're the words that we'll both say
All the same we each will blame the other one
It's the way of the world at war
With itself
And we both soldier on
