Family Ties

Year after year,
Never any change,
Only now I’m old enough to see...
All the generational trauma,
Passed down from grandmomma,
Trying it’s best to seep into me.
Sins of the family,
Living on and never addressed...
Elders who honestly don’t deserve it
Always seem to demand respect...
Always thinking that old-fashioned is correct,
With outdated beliefs that can truly be toxic,
The family ties, ladies & gentlemen,
Ruining lives one generation after the next.
Because when no one can see...
And we all just continue the same old things,
It means no one is healing,
And in turn keeps the family weak;
When no one will stand up and speak,
And no one questions a thing,
Except the one Black Sheep,
Trying to get them to see.
Trying to get them to realize,
Trying to break chains & get others to at least TRY,
Try to address this mess & look inside,
But it’s easier, I suppose, to remain victimized,
It’s easier, I suppose, to hold onto the family ties.
Family ties I want more than anything to break,
A desire to stop and heal the generational ache,
A huge responsibility on my plate,
But what other way will there be brighter days?
