A Glimpse of Eternity

- A Glimpse of Eternity -

Of old, when in other flesh I dwelt, with locks like unto raven night,
I reclined upon a bed of soft silks, a queen worshipped and feared.
My servant was a princess, whom I made my heir and lover aright,
Who loved to collect gemstones and jewels: both opaque and clear.
She made for me a set of lenses, for watching the heavens on high…
And a device with a wheel to power them: with our lost technology.
So oft she would caress my body with oils, as my mind went nigh…
To far galaxies, lost in visions rare and wonderful for a lady to see!

Pinioned betwixt pleasures of the flesh and ecstasies passing sheer.
I wrote oft of my experiences on parchment of bark for later years,
So that my people might ne’er forget when certain stars drew near.
So great was my joy, that when my lover kissed me it drew tears…
For she had showed me a glimpse of eternity more great than any!
But the gods decided to wait, and withheld for me a great surprise.
Surpassing my glimpse of distant worlds spinning above, so many!
Though I could not then know what was nigh nor ever truly realize.

One night, whilst I slumbered upon my bed I was awakened swift,
By a bright light like the sun illuminating my chamber in the temple!
I slid down and donned the lenses so I would not be of sight bereft.
My heir and lover manifested herself in her true form; I did tremble,
To see a goddess made flesh, an angel in all her glory manifested…
Who was ascending, back to heaven; she kissed me one final time.
And I wept such tears as my resolve was by her loss then tested…
So that later I put away the lenses, and all their visions: so sublime.

What could I ever see again in the stars to match my love’s glory?
How could I write to tell my people of such an impossible beauty!
When night became day for a moment, and I knew such a worry…
As I could not follow my heart: beyond the spheres of mortal duty.
I would love again, and of the lenses none knew of their final fate…
But the priests of the temple said a goddess came for them at last!
I knew that goddess was my lover, returned for her creation, late.
And to this day what I saw haunts me, a vision from out the past!
