Ambushed

It was two days before Christmas and all of the colored lights hanging about dressed up the avenue. He was enjoying his late night walk very much. There were so few nights like this one because his job as an emergency room doctor kept him busier than hell. So tonight he made a vow that he would treasure every moment of his walk.
As he walked along Market Street his mind began to wander. He was thinking about the conversation he had had with his wife that very morning. She accused him of being married to his job and that she and their daughter Kristen rarely got to see him since he was always absent.
He let the thoughts go because he wanted to enjoy the moment instead.

He walked past the Walgreen's Drug Store and glanced in the window at the books on a display table Ah, books, he thought! He loved them but couldn't remember the last time he had even read one. Then he remembered how his daughter, Kristen , loved to read as well. He could still hear her telling him just days ago, that she was never happier than when she was reading, especially her Nancy Drew books. She then asked if he would get her a whole set of them for Christmas. He remembered laughing as she flashed her pleading eyes at him.  Did it have to be the whole set he had asked her.  Couldn't she be content with one or two books? To which she replied with a question of her own. Why would I ever want to miss a single mystery? She told him then that she planned to be a detective when she grew up. He smiled to himself thinking of how much he loved his little darling. She was so much like him he thought. He remembered how she pleaded with him giving him that adoring look she always did when she wanted something from him. It did the trick every time and they both knew it. He then told her that he would see what he could do. She stared at him and said it would make her the happiest girl in the world if he would buy them for her. After all, we can afford them she said. End of discussion. He knew that she was right. He knew it was a done deal.

He walked by the alley way between the two stores on Stone Street and was about to turn the nearby corner when suddenly a gunshot pierced through the silent night. He heard a woman screaming and then a deep sobbing sound.

"You killed him, you son of a bitch," he heard the woman scream as he whirled around and headed towards the alley. "You've gone and killed him, you bastard,"

He stopped at the entrance of the alley way where he could see the woman on the pavement leaning over an injured man. He then saw a burly looking man standing nearby with a pistol in one hand.
"He got what he had coming to him," he shot back then he raised the gun and pointed it at the doctor.
"I wouldn't go any further if I were you," the man said to him. "Unless of course you'd like to join the crazy bastard who was fucking my wife."
He froze at the spot uncertain as to what the man might do next. Suddenly, another gunshot sounded from behind the gunman taking him down instantly. There stood a woman with a gun pointing toward the husband. She was dischevelled looking wearing only a light pink bathrobe. She began to shake and the gun fell from her hand.
"He told me he wasn't married. I only found out after he knocked me up. What else could I do?"

He clutched his chest and his jaw dropped just as the sound of oncoming sirens pierced through the night.

What else could she do, she asks? Perhaps, she should have turned on the TV and watched some episodes of Married With Children.
