A Late Night Walk

She grabbed her debit card and slipped it into the pocket of her blue jeans. It was Halloween night and it had been hours since she had had any trick or treaters stopping for candy. She drew the last cigarette from the box, slipped it between her lips and lighted it. It wouldn't be an easy night with no cigarettes, so she resigned herself to the fact that she was going to have to go out for another pack. The convenience store was just around the corner from her apartment and she knew she could go and be back i n no time at all. She grabbed her keys, undid the deadbolt on the door and slipped outside.

It was darker outside than usual because the corner street light was out. She wasn't in the habit of going out alone at night but she lived on a safe street and after all, the store was just around the corner. She dangled the cigarette between her lips, locked the door and went on her way.
Almost immediately, the darkness around her seemed menacing. It will be alright she thought as she reached the end of the block. She paused for a moment thinking she heard footsteps behind her. She started to walk down the block dismissing the sound as something she must have imagined. After all, there couldn't be any trick or treaters out in the street this late. Then all at once, she heard the footsteps sounding behind her once again. She froze on the spot knowing this time that she really had heard them. Her cigarette dropped from her hand and her body began to tremble as she sensed the presence of someone behind her.

Summoning up all the courage she could find, she whirled around and found herself staring at a man who appeared startled himself. She let out a half scream then choking on her words she said,"Oh my God! You just scared me to death! I didn't know someone was following me."
"I'm sorry, lady," he said in a friendly way, "I didn't mean to frighten you."
"Oh-h-h," was all she could say as she turned away and began walking again.
A little further up the road she came across a young man laying face down in the road. She could hear him moaning and attempting to speak. She moved a bit closer to the man attempting to see if he was injured.
"Sir, she managed to say her voice quivering a bit from finding someone in such a place. "Are you injured?"
To her surprise she heard him answer that he was not hurt. She moved into the street and leaning over him she asked, "Are you alright? Do you need some help?"
It was then she heard the sound of screeching tires behind them.  Unfortunately, she couldn't dodge ithe the car as it slammed into her knocking her down. She let out a bloody scream, falling ontop of the young man's body.
