DEMENTIA
her girls come braced
for the onslaught
ashamed that they
resent what's left
remnants pressed
between the sheets
reminiscent of julie
who married john
and birthed those girls
and held them
precious against
the onslaught
right up until
she disappeared
she breaks the surface
for an instant
when jessie mentions papa
but she's gone again
even before the story ends,
that brief spark futile in the gloam,
her sweet blossom spent
long before the stalk will die

Your words stopped me in my tracks, as I flashed back with sudden very real kinship, here. I'm sending out strength and some wellness juju to you and yours. I can relate to this awful affliction, unfortunately, all too well.
I sympathize with it's immense toll on all who know it's clutches.

It's important for people to try and understand
the devastation it brings and perhaps get some self therapeutic relief/release in your spill...

My father suffered vascular dementia and I think I fear it.
This was inspired by some I care for at work.
The families suffer so much.

Plenty of E assonance throughout reinforcing bits of not quite repetition, but similarity. We tend to age in barely noticeable increments, but the choice of wording here reinforces the message that it is occuring in leaps - thus emphasizing gaps exist, such as gaps in memory. I hope this bit of assessment wasn't too weird.
My father passed away while in the throes of Alzheimer's. It somewhat helped mitigate the pain he went through in his final days and spared him humiliation he would have endured at the hands of my sister had he been fully in the present.

I know my father had no sense of time and place, and it probably helped him.
