The Tree Remembers

But the Axe forgets
Why is it that I can remember all the
times you insist I’m worthless
Or struck me and insist you love me after
But when I look back too reminisce on times of joy they are blank
You’ve stolen my joy
Leaving me with resentment
Then promptly forgot my pain and scars
The Tree remembers

The Axe forgets
Neglectfully leaving a sapling to grow
In roots of vernacular poison
14 hours of limbo
Kidnappers don’t let you call
But was I transplanted to healthy soil?
or cut down before I could sprout?
The Trees remember

The Axe forgets
How I would “roughhouse,” and it was fun
till it wasn’t
Pain in my stomach, no bruises to show
Should’ve fought back, killed the Axe
but I’m a tree
and trees only stand and watch
As the forest remembers

The Axe continues to forget
it’s own brutality
As a tree was defiled, beyond recognition
Was this tree sold to become firewood
or was it coincidence, horrible
nightmarish, coincidence
That only the wind through the leaves remember.
