It's Not Forever

I had a dream once.
I didn’t like how it ended.
We see only what we want.
But how can I pretend?
That you’re not dead.

I saw the mountains.
Growing old and gray.
From hardened faces.
Eroded away.

It’s not forever, they said.
That I will watch the dead.
If I can end it all right now.
Would anyone hold me down?

I saw the fields.
Dying and growing again.
Every harvest it yields.
Numbers beyond ken.

Withering wastelands.
Glaciers overtook it all.
I remain standing.
But I’m not standing tall.

It’s not forever, they said.
That I will watch the dead.
If I can end it all right now.
Would anyone hold me down?

It’s not forever, they said.
Until I will join the dead.
I still cannot see the end.
Yet it comes for you my friend.

Your body turned to bones.
The snow covers it up.
As an ice age comes and goes.
I am still a pup.

Your bones turn to dust.
And your memory as well.
Living immortally.
Is living in hell.

It’s not forever, they said.
That I will watch the dead.
If I can end it all right now.
Would anyone hold me down?

It’s not forever, they said.
Until I will join the dead.
I still cannot see the end.
Yet it comes for you my friend.
