Paradise

I captained a trip on a sailing ship
Across the rough and rolling seas
Looking for a place away from the race
Where I could do whatever I pleased
I passed an old man from the promised land
Who offered these words to the wise
It's not as they say if you go on that way
It's the same place in disguise

He said, "Paradise, well it ain't that nice
Go back from where you came
Cause unless you're blind you're gonna find
It's not better, Just more of the same"

I tried to sort as I sailed into port
All the things the old man had said
And what I found as I searched around
It was no better than from where I had fled
So I boarded the ship for the return trip
Looking forward to coming home
And on the way I'd pass others who'd stray
Looking for better places to roam

I told them, "Paradise, well it ain't that nice
Go back from where you came
Cause unless you're blind you're going to find
It's not better, just more of the same"

On my return the ship I burned
Cause I knew I'd not need it again
And what I found when I came aground
Was a place that I'd never been
The problems I'd find were the same I left behind
But no fuss from me would there be
They were small in the scheme of it all
There had been a change in me

Cause Paradise, Well it ain't that nice
It's only better cause you want it so bad
Unless you're blind you're gonna find
It's not as good as what you already had

Author's Note
The year was 1999, and I had just watched a Billy Joel interview, and he explained how he writes lyrics. I know it sounds more like Jimmy Buffett. I decided to write a simple song about "The grass is always greener" and this is what I came up with. Since then I found Hawaii, and not sure that isn't Paradise, but since I can't afford to live there, maybe. Hope you enjoy.
