[ WotD ] Nemesis
As for the New Girl in her oddyssey
moved here from suburbs of Mt. Olympus
I'm not the least bit jealous;
she's far from isangelous;
Hardly Helen from Homer's "Iliad"
---more Gorgon than Aphrodite;
Instagram following, a mere chiliad
Bitch, you don't wanna mess with me;
steer clear of cheer squad tryouts
or I will fuck your shit up

I love how you take themes like “nemesis” and “jealousy” and put them into such a relatable context like the high school cheer squad...Brilliant!
Here, I sense the narrators feelings of weakness and perhaps fear at the arrival of the new girl on campus, wrapped in her words of wanting.
I must admit, I’m not much of a mythology/Ancient Greece guy, so some of the references were lost on me (I had to look up “Chiliad” for example) but the way you married the ancient with the modern underscored just how universal the feeling of jealousy is.
I always have fun reading your work Mary!

You sensed correctly, RPM! And thank you for the wonderful comments. :) "chiliad" was from the Word of the Day challenge in the Speakeasy forum - it was new to me as well!
