Mingled

The days lay bright and warm
Though the leaves are touched by change
And some few lie scattered
Here or there
Vagrant things
On the walk and upon the roof
With some few more around the yard
Yet
Still the hickory holds to green
Though the dogwoods and sweet gums fade
Reddish orange and yellow-gold
It's October now
As summer mingles with the fall
And sun rides lower whose beams grow long
Tree tops glowing bright and warm
As if to speak of elder days
And halcyon times
That pleasant reminisce with the mind
As if transposed to a different Age
For autumn's breath steals in
Handmaid to winter at summers end
And I
In deepening night which longer lays
Shall dream sweet dreams of coming spring
Though in the changling season bound
By day awed
As nature's muse surrounds
Til winter comes
And all lies dead and cold
Chilled by frost and touch with snow
Bleak
Whose days hold no warmth
And nights would seek to rule the day

But its just fall that whispers now
As last caress of summer lingers
And I shall glory in the day
That lies in warmth with color mingled
