Esker's Crest

If only you and I
could lie today
upon the esker's crest,
upon its sun-browned grass
together, there,
atop the uplands,
in the high hills,
there above the restless heather and the heath,
there beneath the surge of sky,
the blue ascent,
within the shadowed mountain's cleft.
,
How then I would dare
to speak to you of magic
and enchantments deep
that bind the earth to us.

How I’d seek to pledge
and make it so
that on that spot
there is,
there is,
there is some space,
some huddling place
within this world,
between the wind song and the briar's breath
that's truly ours
and ours alone.
