Sonnet writ to students.
To write verse, this is, to practice a craft
its not enough to have paper and pen,
it takes skill, knowledge, insight and hard graft
to paint scenes of life, nature, women, men.
As you learn your craft by versifying,
just as masons start by mixing cement,
try to raise your rhyme above, make words sing,
like Temples rise from stone, to heaven sent.
And if rage should come, with bloody anger,
write it down to thus feed your savage fist,
the better to learn to turn it tender,
as a child, reaching for your arms, would wish.
By studying the craft you may gain Art,
Will you succeed? I know not, that's your part.
