Smoke Ghosts

The smoke outside is slipping through
The window over the carpet straight to my head
Pooling at the innermost base of my skull
It bleeds into my brain disappearing into my dream
It takes shape, one ever so familiar
The details hazy, but, oh, so you
Thick pale smoke, opaque and still
Until it breaks the trance of wistful staring
It moves; hands reaching out and tracing
In the way only you know how to
Over my jaw to the back of my neck
Gently pulling me forward into an embrace
The sweetness in your touch is incomparable
The light, lingering smell of your cologne
It is so easy to lean into this smoke memory
To rest my face into this apparitions chest
Oh, how foolish it is to embrace ghosts
But to face an unspoken truth to myself
You have always been my favorite one
The smoke figure is so like you
It's easy to forget it really is not you
That this is, but only a dream, a dream,
This smoke dream out of loneliness
Created out of wishing for a different path
A different journey, one where I chose you
