Masculine Color
i’m a man
give me
solid colors
grounded in reality
red green yellow blue
maybe a little
orange or purple
annihilate
almond auburn
amethyst
forget fuchsia
jettison
jet jade
jonquil
kill
kelly
and key lime
liquidate
licorice lemon
lilac
maybe
maroon khaki
olive-drab navy
but never
nickel nyanja
-nothing neon
sapphire? umber?
violet? zomp?
are you kidding?
i’m a man
give me
black and white or
give me
charcoal
granite
death

This amazing ... such flow ... love all the colors ... then how it hones down to the simple few ... poignant finish ...

That is great. Beautifully done.
Despite all shades and nuance, blue is simply blue.
Blue-green, maybe, but still, you speak the truth.

i don't think Patrick Henry would be too upset with his rearrangement of words. but i do wonder why you limit yourself to solid colors. yes, blue will always be blue. but blue means soooooo many different things. and depressed blue isn't expressed nearly as well in the same blue as, say.... a happy, chirping blue bird. though, i can understand not wanting all the options.
regardless. this is a well thought poem. well done.

Re: Re. Masculine Color
The idea for this poem came out of frustration with an irritating salesperson. I needed paint for a small project and the color wasn’t really important,
I was in a hurry and went to the paint section of the local hardware store. I asked for some blue paint and she walked with me to the paint chip rack, which had about five-hundred cards. She started asking whether i wanted a warm or cold blue and I realized she was going to try to up sell. I started looking at the cards which were displayed with the colors hidden and only the name of the manufacturers color line displayed. I pulled three cards out, picked a blue and told the girl I wanted a quart of that color. She tried to show me a few more shades, but I insisted that was the color I wanted. Then she said “OK now let’s go find the base paint”
They didn’t have cans of each color, you pick a base and then they blend the color. Of course the base paints aren’t just white, but ‘ivory’or ‘eggshell‘ or ‘translucent pearl’.
I saw a can of blue spray paint on the opposite side of the aisle- grabbed that said “I’ll take this” and walked away to the register.
I understand there are many shades of color, but sometimes , if you’re just painting an old lawn chair, you just need blue.
Patrick Henry might roll over in his grave (from laughter).
Thank you .🤠🙏
