Image for the poem Moon Tree

Moon Tree

She had seen his golden face passing
From the time her leaves were shoots
A thousand nights through all seasons
He watched as she spread her roots

As the years went by they grew closer
As her gnarled trunk took her to the sky
And there were nights he hung so low
Moonbeams twinkled in her dark eyes

They spent their nights in starry silence
Content to listen to the soft sounds
Of owls that nested in her branches
Of distant echoes of stray hounds

When Winter stripped her of her beauty
When Summer heat withered her away
He would still pour her with moonlight
To watch her branches dance and sway
