The Fat Cat Poem

Just an hour ago
The tropical storm passed over the city
Its belly, boisterous
Hungry and seeking catharsis
Cooling the exponentially hot summer
It was dark
And sobbing onto all of the streets and leaves
But curiously
In a mere matter of minutes
It dissipated into balmy breeze
Like the steady exhale of the meditating man
The sun has even made a welcome return!
The winds are stiff but even so
I open my windows
Just an inch or maybe two
My dear house gets so stale sometimes
And i think my pothos and petunias and peppermint plants
Would appreciate some much needed time to wriggle like babies
I take these winds
This cool
Even the heavy rain
As a sweet, sweet blessing
Something to break up the days alone and inside
But exactly one block away
I can see them
The encampment on the parkway
Those who don't have the luxury
of boredom
of four walls
 and a roof
I can see the settlement
Growing rampantly
Branching out, geometrically
They endured the long sleepless night
Parents sat soaked with children
Maybe they made the unfortunate weather a special occasion
Because they had to
That's what my mom would have done
Although, I guess I really don't know
Maybe they sat in silence
Maybe they sat alone and worried and lost and strong
Through a storm
That no doubt destroyed formal infrastructure
And surely sent the temporary tarp housing flying
Into manicured Rodin gardens
Into the icy facade of the Whole Foods
Maybe even to the jewel of the city,
The temple at the top of the hill
And even so,
This morning i awoke
Like a fat cat
And i opened my windows
Thanking the rain and wind.
Who’s the parasite again?
