Bill's Day

It was a gloomy Tuesday afternoon. It was raining on and off, and sideways since early morning. Fortunately for Bill, he had slept through the worst of it. He opened his eyes that were full of sticky sleep and let out a painful growl. A million sensations overwhelmed his body: cold, hunger, headache, nausea, something sharp between his shoulder blades... Could it be the knife in his back? Put there by last nights designated driver... one who was supposed to take him home? Bill was certainly not home... after taking a second look at his surrounding it was pretty clear he was lying inside a dumpster. Another wild night of cocaine and hookers in the Andromeda galaxy.
Bill laughed and clumsily stood up. He attempted to reach the painful area on his back alas with no success.
"What a night!" He thought. "I hope... I'm at least back on Earth?"
With no recollection of how he ended up where he was, he got out of the container and found himself in a shady alley. Stumbling through the dark Bill jumped a little as he faced some wonky-ass hobo in his way. Amused, he discovered it was a mirror. Bill was a hot mess. His snow-white, thousand-dollar three-piece suit was stained with blood and something yellow. The sleeves of his jacket, along with most of the buttons of his shirt were missing. His hair was crispy... he figured it was dried dumpster juice. Also, he had a black eye. He turned sideways and saw a wooden crucifix sticking out of his back. Bill just grinned and giggled. Clearly, this was a prank of some sort. Haha! It took some time, yet he managed to get the cross out from his back. He threw away his tattered suit and put on some clothes he found in the alley, probably left there for bums like him. A black hoodie and a pair of jeans fit him well, and he was ready to begin his walk home.

"Hello, children..." He thought while glaring at the bypassers on the street, his face hidden under the hood.
So many times, he had watched the city in the mornings, standing naked by the enormous window of his skyscraper apartment. Yet, he realised, until now... he had never been among the streets. For now, he was just another citizen. Just another human. No expensive clothing, no limo, no driver... no golden chains, no influence, nothing. Bill felt a rush, he felt like a kid playing pretend again. It was so exciting.
He began walking down the unfamiliar street. The rain had stopped, though the sidewalks were pretty much flooded. Bill's feet were soaked, and he was starting to feel a chill creeping upon him. He tucked his hands in his pockets and found a hundred dollar bill. He was surprised but thought nothing more of it. After all, that's human nature. Some are scumbags, and some will occasionally do something nice, like charity and so. The crumbled up paper held no real value to someone like Bill, so he soon threw it away in some beggars cup.
"Probably will spend it on booze..." Bill thought and continued braking through the crowd, not looking back.
Sometime later he began recognising his surrounding and slowed down his pace, as he understood he'll be home soon. He kept slowing his pace until he stopped altogether. Something caught his attention.
A proud police officer was beating the shit out of a sobbing man. Bill looked around with amusement. It seems no one cared, people were passing by, just chatting away. Interested Bill walked up to the scene and casually asked the policeman, what was he doing?
The officer lifted his eyes that were burning with righteous fervour. Drops of his victim's blood flowed down his face.
"This fucker's high on shrooms or some shit. Refused to cooperate." The officer struck another kick with his steel-plated boot. "Talking conspiracy theories. Freaking nutjob!!!"
The man on the ground had passed out. The officer gestured for two more men to get him into the car.
"Nice Uni Forms you got these days!" Bill grinned.
"Are you high too, mate?" The officer sniffed heavily all the snot that was coming out of his nose and squinted his eyes at Bill.
"No, sir. Just enjoying another wonderful day! Not looking for any problems!" He made a serious face and said strongly, "Thank god there is still justice in the streets. Thank you, officer!" Bill could barely hold back the laughter.
"Disgusting, isn't it?" The officer wiped his face and sighed, tired from the beating. "You know, this country isn't what it used to be. How can we feel safe with lunatics like these running around these days?"
"I don't know, sir. Its a shame... isn't it?" Sharp teeth peered from under Bills lips.
"Sure it is. Stay safe, obey the law, kid!" The officer smiled at Bill and moved on to the car. "Alright. Take em away boys!"
The police car raced away with loud sirens blaring.  Bill stayed behind entertained and disgusted. People were still passing by, nothing had happened. This was normal.

Bodies were walking and strutting. Cheerful music was playing in every other store. Car engines purred, everyone was on their way to/from work. A busy world. Bill walked slowly, breathing like he was breathing for the first time in his life. It was a rush to walk trough the matrix he had built.
He observed his reflection in store windows, among branded uniform selling mannequins, and copies of faceless citizens. Both plastic and flesh - dead. Yet he was more alive than ever. He was a wolf in sheep's clothing, among a massive herd of cattle... Distracted. Not even a sheepdog could recognise him. Bill was the Mastermind and he was getting away with all of it. He had never killed, nor stolen freedom, in fact, he had ever stolen anything... the only thing Bill was guilty of, was possessing a disciplined mind. Where Bill was from, wolves were on one page, while confused cattle played and fought in the fields over leftovers of wonders, used up by the strong.
Bill was almost home. He couldn't help but view each bypasser with disgust. It didn't matter whether it was a young mother with a baby on her hands, or a handicapped veteran... he was both pleased and repulsed by the blindness of his servants, who neglected the gift of freedom so sweetly... and blamed wolves like Bill so bitterly.

If only there was a mirror big enough...
