Failure of Simple Words
There are some words,
That are simply too simple,
To convey the necessary import.
There is no poem sufficient,
No song expansive enough,
To hold true meaning for complex emotion.
There is no catch all one-liner in which it will fit.
There is no leather binding capable of holding it.
There is no piece of plastic that can memorize it.
Words are simply not enough,
Where matters of heart are at stake.
There is no phrase to define this.
So, where simple words shall fail,
I shall attempt to paint you pictures,
And hope that you may intuit my feelings’ depth and breadth.
Strength of great riptides,
Churning and foaming,
Enticing and catching then carrying away.
Age of great mountain peaks,
Thrust into atmosphere and cloud,
Full of relics of their own history.
Breadth of tectonic plates,
Slow to move, but ever doing so,
Grinding away, giving way and building up.
Clear water of mountain spring,
Playfully gurgling over smooth stones,
Reflecting and refracting every color it catches.
Heat of summer asphalt,
Shimmering and melting, sticking and reeking,
Under greatest, continuous weight, buckling.
Moisture of jungle,
Steam ever rising, clinging, condensing,
Warm nourishment and ample drink.
Cold of ice storms,
Stopping life flow with crystalline beauty,
Brutal, dangerous, deadly, unpredictable.
Shearing winds of tornados,
Ripping away foundations to deposit elsewhere,
Furious, indiscriminate force of power.
Rain and flood of hurricanes,
Drowning beaches and beach goers without refuge,
Assaulting the land from the sea without remorse.
Clarity and Beauty of Stars,
Pinpoint lights to guide those who read them,
Offering their eternal celestial wisdom.
These are the things I wish to convey.
These are the thoughts for which I can find no single word.
There are the feelings I wish to attempt to express.

And convey my love, adoration and respect.

I enjoyed how you “traveled” all over the world in this poem, trying to find the words that you know are unfindable. You conveyed a sense of wonder and searching so well here . Your audience of one is a lucky person to be at the center of that universe.

You are far too kind. I enjoy trying to express myself through what nature shows me and how I feel in that moment my eyes first catch sight of it.
As for my audience of one, I wrote this poem to myself after a long battle with a bruised and battered heart. Turns out, I absolutely adore myself for it! 🙂

Thanks for sharing that. I wish I could find that same level of emotion when I write. I tend to stay on the surface, at the physical level.
