All the Little Worms

Each and every step hurts
These knees are getting old
But this heart beats like a drum
Wanting to go faster and further
But the air is getting warmer
And there are a few minutes before the sun comes up over the mountains

Here in the valley
Where the summers are dry and hot
All the little worms
Out to the side walks
Are crawling back into the grass
Now that I’m older and slower in pace
I notice more of these things

Permanent Waves play in my ears
As I make the final stretch home
The sun comes up over the mountains
With Natural Science
I pay attention so as to not step on them
“All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies”

Tomorrow morning I’ll go further
Perhaps faster…
I say to myself
Feeling my stride coming back
Feeling my pride coming back
Knowing I tried not to step
On the little creatures that one day will consume me
But for now, I’ll chase my destiny

What a glorious sunrise it is
