Velvet Walls

Escape we must
from the velvet walls of eternity
dashing souls past matted earth
and drying roses
propped as bed sheets upon
our death sacks
with slouched shoulders we crouch
our hungry bones
our sunken cheeks
our borrowed teeth
our braided tongues
we jam a life
into this barren cave
left only to feed off
ourselves
now hollowed bodies of
membrane
bacteria
and the bitter cells of our past
choking at the roots of creation
beautifully rotting in symphony
dreaming the same dream
swimming alone
along the same seas
among the same fields
forever and beyond
for our task now is to
follow the sounds
of the revelers above us
dancing among the stones
with words of allegiance
while the harboring gales winds
burn at the salty tears billowing
off the familiar powdered jaws
of lovers come and gone
each more radiant
saddened to a point
soon rush off for one last gasp
one last memory
before the grapes wrinkle
before the sun sleeps
before the winds cut close
where all that's left is to lick at the walls
of worn velvet
gathering dust with all the others
soon long forgotten.
