A Touch of Spring

There's the soft lift of blue that carries the song of birds to touch the clouds
And green
The world's turned green again
From raggedy lawn
Growing free before the first cutting
Yearning in the sun
Softly rippling
As the cool of the breeze
Wends its way
In that peculiar cool to the warmth of the day
Like the last fading echoes of winter forgot
In the lavender and dogwoods
Pink and white which are scattered
Among the green of leaves and buds
Of trees in varied shades of green
For today is awake to things
Like life
And idle thoughts
And the trilling of birds across the meadow
That sharpens the mind
To thoughts undefined
As if you could see into a feeling
Or touch the whisper of more
Though it lies hidden
As nature in turn does each gift bring forth

And I sit in the silence of the setting sun
A soft amber blaze beyond distant trees
Listening as insects hum
And feel with certainty in my soul
That such days as these are gifts
And few
To almost feel the earth beneath the fields
And I thank God
For slow and backward country places
Which sit slightly akilter of time
And the hustle and bustle of cities
No matter how grand
For the simple things please me
Though I am no better than any
I can understand things here
And try to craft the beauty I feel
Into words
Yet how does one describe the smell of green
And the purpling sky as the sun draws down
Night whispering in the coolness
Of coming dreams
And I feel the profoundest peace
And wish you could feel it too
